چکیده

We are conducting the first systematic 3D spectroscopic imaging survey to quantify the properties of the atomic gas (Hi) in a distance-limited sample of 28 Seyfert galaxies and a sample of 28 inactive control galaxies with well-matched optical properties (the VHIKINGS survey). This study aims to address the role of the host galaxy in nuclear activity and confront outstanding controversies in optical/IR imaging surveys. Early results show possible relationships between Seyfert activity and HI extent, content and the prevalence of small, nearby gas-rich dwarf galaxies (MHI ∼10 M⊙); results will be tested via rigorous comparison with control galaxies. Initial results from our optical followup study of 15 of our galaxies using the SAURON integral field unit on the WHT suggest a possible difference between Seyfert and inactive stellar and gaseous kinematics that support the conclusion that internal kinematics of galaxies are the key to nuclear activity.

The Central Kiloparsec of Seyfert and Inactive Host Galaxies: a Comparison of Two-Dimensional Stellar and Gaseous Kinematics

We investigate the properties of the two-dimensional distribution and kinematics of ionised gas and stars in the central kiloparsecs of a matched sample of nearby active (Seyfert) and inactive galaxies, using the SAURON Integral Field Unit on the William Herschel Telescope. The ionised gas distributions show a range of low excitation regions such as star formation rings in Seyferts and inactive...

Localized magnetic reconnection as a cause of extraplanar diffuse ionised gas in the galactic halo

Many observations indicate the occurrence of ionised gas in the distant halos of galaxies (including our own). Since photoionisation by stars (mainly O stars, young or evolved low-mass stars depending on the kind of galaxy) does not seem to be exclusively responsible for the ionisation of the hydrogen filaments that should otherwise cool fast and recombine quickly, the question arises which ext...

AGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies

We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...

The origin of σ–drops: mapping stellar kinematics and populations in spirals

The link between nuclear activity and the host galaxy remains elusive. It seems now clear that the galactic environment is not the key, and that there is no significant apparent difference in terms of the presence of bars/spirals between active and non-active galaxies. Nuclear activity nevertheless requires a small central gas reservoir (10-10 M⊙) which may be only partly consumed during the ∼ ...

Starbursts in barred spiral galaxies VI . HI observations and the K - band Tully - Fisher relation ⋆

This paper is primarily a study of the effect of a bar on the neutral hydrogen (HI) content of starburst and Seyfert galaxies. We also make comparisons with a sample of " normal " galaxies and investigate how well starburst and Seyfert galaxies follow the fundamental scaling Tully-Fisher (TF) relation defined for normal galaxies. 111 Markarian (Mrk) IRAS galaxies were observed at the Nançay rad...
